"Local Hangout" is a 513 Interlocking Piece Puzzle made in the USA (produced by a New York puzzle manufacturer) from an original photo taken by Jennifer Johnson. This puzzle when complete measures Aprox. 15" x 21". The photo was taken with a Nikon D70 camera in 2005, around lunch time, on the banks of the deepwater creek that provides most of the safe harbor for the fishing fleet in Hatteras Village. The pelicans, in various stages of preening and resting, often gather in the creek just in case, while unloading their catch, the local fishermen happen to drop an fish over the side of the boat or dock. The dilapidated remains they are roosting on is the "Porpoise Factory". From 1885 to 1891, a "porpoise factory", or oil rendering plant, was located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in Hatteras Village. The early 20th century was a pivotal period whereby porpoises were not only a commercially harvested natural resource but were also of growing scientific interest. In later years, the building was owned by the state of North Carolina and used by students of North Carolina State University as a research station. Jennifer Johnson's father, Bill Foster, was one of those graduate students who studied here. The building was not been used over the last several decades. Through numerous hurricanes, most of it has remained in place. However the natural decay of the structure provides some very interesting photo opportunities, as it is a favorite spot of local birds and wildlife.
